Overcoming Addiction * Lesson 4 * The Natural Cover-up
 Lesson 4 - Natural Cover-up

Proverbs 28:13 He who covers his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.

In this verse we have a promise that some might not consider positive, but it is. It promises mercy to those who know the LORD as Savior and King because sin is like cancer. Cancer, if left to prosper by itself, just like sin, will eventually kill. If we are children of the King, we will not prosper in our sin nor will we be able to cover it up. God, in His mercy, will reveal it.

The word prosper is not limited to finances as we might first think; it also covers the health, emotional, legal, and spiritual areas. We will see deterioration in every major life area when we sin, slow at first because of God’s mercy, but with increasing velocity. God is slow to act, and sometimes we mistake His mercy and longsuffering for the misconceived idea that we have somehow escaped His sight.

Ecclesiastes 8:11 Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.

Jeremiah 2:19Your own wickedness will correct you, and your backslidings will rebuke you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing that you have forsaken the LORD your God, and the fear of Me is not in you," says the Lord GOD of hosts.

We must remember that either our sin will correct us or it will be exposed.. God allows this because we are His children, and He only disciplines those whom He loves. If we do not receive God’s discipline, then we are not His. The LORD loves us and will use everything in His power to save us, discipline us, correct us, and train us in righteousness. He chastens and scourges us because of His mercy, compassion, and love for us (Numbers 32:23; Hebrews 12:5-11). He knows better than us that SIN KILLS!
