Pure Word has volunteers that go to our local county jails and state institutions.
Regulations allow us to go into these institutions in only one of two capacities. "Prison Volunteers" teach classes to groups of inmates and have no one-on-one contact with them. "Prison Visitors" have one-on-one contact only.
Prison Volunteers are taken through several trainings to prepare them to meet the needs and deal with the issues of working with groups of inmates. During this training process, location of service will be decided and the volunteer will complete an application.
- The state has a class for volunteers that is held on Saturdays every other month throughout the year. Classes are from 8 am to 4 pm. There is no pre-registration needed - just show up at I.S.C.I. Administration Building Conference Room, 13400 Pleasant Valley Rd, Boise. If you have any questions, please contact Les Peterson at 336-0740, Ext 4630 or email: lpeterse@idoc.idaho.gov
- Pure Word Ministries also conducts more intensive training for volunteers. Registration is required for these classes.
- Each particular institution or jail may also have its own volunteer orientation program. They may also require their own training.
- Once volunteers have received the overall training, they "shadow" with a Pure Word facilitator for a period of time until they are ready to teach bible studies on their own.
All volunteers must be free from correctional supervision. Exceptions must be cleared through the Idaho Dept of Corrections.
